Contemporary vs. Modern Dance: What's the Difference?

Back to all articles

Contemporary and modern dance are often used interchangeably, but they are actually distinct art forms with different histories and approaches to movement.

Modern dance emerged in the early 20th century as a rebellion against the rigid structure of classical ballet. Pioneers like Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Merce Cunningham developed codified techniques with specific vocabularies. Modern dance emphasizes gravity, contraction and release, and emotional expression through structured movement.

Contemporary dance, which developed from the 1960s onward, is more fluid and eclectic. It draws from multiple techniques – ballet, modern, jazz, and even martial arts – without adhering to a single school. Contemporary dancers often work with floor work, improvisation, and partnering. The style emphasizes versatility, personal expression, and pushing boundaries. In my classes, we explore elements of both styles, giving you a rich foundation in movement.
